Blend your living space seamlessly with the outdoors.
At an initial planning meeting to discuss windows and doors for a custom home project our clients brought us a unique request. Their home is situated lakeside with a fabulous view and they wanted to fully enjoy it. We began to discuss how to integrate the interior living area with the outdoor patio. We suggested using a garage door in place of window units. The challenge– how to integrate the door into the wall area. We came up with a solution that met the challenge! Think pocket door turned on its side!
There were several technical details to consider. Where to “park” the door when it was raised and how to integrate the screens in the process. The roll-up door is custom built by Overhead Door and is 18 feet wide and 12 ft tall, made using Douglas Fir and tempered glass. After much consideration our solution was to raise the door through a 4 inch slot in the finished ceiling- it slides right up and out of the way and tucks nicely into the attic above. The entire house has spray foam insulation so there is no air leakage that occurs. We installed motorized screens on the rear porch, which roll down into place, in conjunction with the door rolling up.
With the press of a button the client now has a beautiful solution that creates a living space, allowing them to enjoy the fabulous view and the outdoors, bug-free! Check it out in action:
